ABOUT IR MEASURING OF TEMPERATURE

PRINCIPLES
It is a well known fact that all objects emit electromagnetic waves, or radiation, depending on the temperature of the object. When the radiation spreads, it also transports energy. This means that the radiation can be used to measure the temperature with-out touching the measured object.

WHEN DOES IR TEMPERATURE MEASURING WORK?
Generally, it can be used to take measurements on all non-metal-lic materials and painted metal surfaces. When it comes to highly polished metal surfaces, we do not recommended IR measuring without painting or taping the surface.

WHAT IS AN EMISSIONS FACTOR?
Since different materials emit, radiate and reflect to varying degrees, a correction needs to be made to ensure that IR meas-uring is accurate. This correction is called the emissions factor.

ERROR SOURCES IN IR MEASURING

  • Incorrectly set emissions factor. Check the correct factor is set if you are able to make adjustments.
    Polished metal surface. The reflection affects measuring more than the emission.
    Measuring point is larger than the measured object.
    Dirt or condensation on the lens.
    Major temperature difference between instrument and ambient air.
